Addu Equatorial Hospital has officially launched a Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab), marking a significant milestone in the delivery of specialized cardiac care in the Maldives.
This is the first time a Cath Lab has been established outside of Malé City, and its opening in Addu City represents a major advancement for healthcare services in the southern region of the Maldives. The Cath Lab has been established in collaboration of the Male’ Group of Hospital, National Cardiac Center and its Management, bringing advanced cardiac diagnostic and interventional services closer to patients residing in Addu and the surrounding atolls.
On 27th and 28th January, the AEH Cath Lab provided services to seven patients. The procedures performed included:
Coronary angiography
Coronary angioplasty
Complex main coronary bifurcation intervention
Cerebral Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA)
These cases demonstrate the Cath Lab’s operational readiness and clinical capability.
With the establishment of this facility, patients requiring cardiac investigations and procedures will no longer need to travel to Malé City for certain services, reducing both the financial and logistical burden on patients and their families. The Cath Lab is expected to significantly enhance early diagnosis and treatment of heart-related conditions in the region.
Some of the cardiac diagnostic and interventional services offered by the AEH Cath Lab include:
Diagnostic coronary angiography
PCI and stenting for simple and complex lesions
Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) device closure
Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) device closure
Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) device closure
Pericardiocentesis
Temporary and permanent pacemaker implantation
Peripheral angiogram
Peripheral angioplasty
We sincerely thank the Male’ Group of Hospital, National Cardiac Center, and AEH staff for their collaboration in establishing this service.
