Hulhumeedhoo Health Centre

On December 26, 1990, A Health Centre was established at Hulhumeedhoo by the government of Maldives. The Health Centre was commenced by the health minister at the time, Mr Abdulla Kamaaludhin. Initially, the Health Centre was equipped with basic facilities, including a four-bed Ward, one Consulting room, one Dressing room, and a small waiting hall. Services were provided by a Community Health Officer and four Family Health workers.

On 1st July 1997, consulting services commenced with the appointment of the first doctor at the Health Centre. On 31st October 1998, the health Centre underwent expansion, incorporating a seven-bed ward, a three-bed maternity ward, a Laboratory, a Family Health section, and additional staff. Ambulance Services were initiated on November 16, 1998, and Laboratory services began on June 27, 2003.

In 2007, the government decided to expand and the foundation for a new building was laid on May 15, 2007, by then Health Minister, Honorable Ilyas Ibrahim. The new building comprised two wards (7 beds each), an additional five-bed ward, two Consulting rooms, a Laboratory, a Dressing room, an office room, a Family Health section room, a Medical Store, a Child-friendly veranda, a laundry area, a nursing station, and a Labor room. The new building was inaugurated by Health Minister, Honorable Ilyas Ibrahim on July 5, 2008. In 2008, services transitioned to a 24-hour operation with additional staff, 2 Ambulances, and a Sea Ambulance. An outreach service was introduced with specialist doctors from Hithadhoo Regional Hospital visiting HMHC twice a month.

In 2018, Hithadhoo Reginal Hospital was transformed into a tertiary hospital. After Dr. Mohamed Solih took over management of Addu Equatorial Hospital as CEO, the decision was made to utilize the HMHC extension building to introduce, ENT Services, Ophthalmology Services, Dental Services, X-ray Services, Dialysis and Physiotherapy Services with full machinery and equipment. On December 15, 2022, the vice president of the Maldives, Honorable Faisal Naseem inaugurated the extension building, marking the official commencement of services.

Hulhumeedhoo Health Centre currently operates 24-hours with a staff of 47. It has a capacity of 20 beds providing both Outpatient Services (OPD) and inpatient Services (IPD). Health Professionals include three Medical Officers, two medical laboratory technologists, and fifteen Nurses. Public Health Services are provided by a department consisting of two community Health Officers and five family health officers. Specialist consultation services are available from HMHC, with outpatient services provided three days a week by specialist doctors from Addu Equatorial Hospital. As a Health Centre, HMHC is currently the largest and offers the most extensive array of services in the Maldives.
